About

 OUR SCHOOL

Our Story

The Helping House was opened in 2008 by teacher Amanda Johnson and parent, Josie Johnson.

The teacher/parent team decided better services and therapy could be provided to children in highly-structured setting with a low student/teacher ratio. The focus is four-fold: to improve students self-care skills, language, independent work skills, and tolerance of peers. These skills will increase the child's success in their next learning environment, whether it is a local public school, homeschool, or a more specialized center.

The doors to The Helping House opened to two students in the Fall of 2008. Since its opening, we have served over 300 children and their families through multiple programs.

Our Vision

SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALS OF TOMORROW

At The Helping House, we envision a future where every child, regardless of their diagnosis or developmental challenges, has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. Through our unwavering commitment to early intervention and specialized support, we aspire to create a world where every child receives the care, resources, and opportunities they need to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives. With compassion, innovation, and collaboration at the heart of our work, we strive to be a beacon of hope and empowerment for families in our community and beyond. Together, we envision a future where every child's unique abilities are celebrated, and where inclusion and acceptance flourish.

Our Mission

WHAT WE STAND FOR

Our primary purpose is to provide early intervention services to local children with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum and other sensory and developmental delays.

Come see what makes my school special just like me!
Sensory Gym

This is a safe indoor space for the things I need to do! Climbing, jumping, swinging, running, and many other activities. Our floor is padded and safe. I can do social activities like ride the two person bike or climb the rock wall! I can be by myself to do the shape puzzles on the wall or play with big  magnets on the gym door. This is one of the best places to be at The Helping House!

Structured Work Stations

Every work station is set up the same for me at school. My work is out and ready for me so that I can get started on my own. My teachers are there to help me when I need it, or to teach me new things, but as I gain confidence in my skills, I am encouraged to be independent too!

Low Stimulation Areas

There are several spaces at school where I can go to escape. Sometimes it is a quiet, dark nook in where no one can see me. Sometimes I choose the closet with the colorful lights and crash pad. Sometimes I climb up in the loft with my stuffed animals so I can have a moment. My teachers know that I do my best work when I am regulated and they help me learn to do that on my own!

Outdoor Play Area

Sunshine, climbing, swinging, and fresh air! What could be better? I love to play chase with my friends. I love to swing on the porch swing and watch the wind in the trees. I like to look closely at the tiny plants that grow by the deck. I can write my whole alphabet as big as I want to on the sidewalk! We love being outside!

Safety and Accessibility

My week is full of unique sensory activities that help me learn about the world around me. My teachers know that sometimes touching new things is difficult for me, so they help me learn how to explore things in a way that makes me feel safe and brave!
